Your data, plainly

One short page, in plain language. We ask for one thing, an email address, and this says exactly what happens to it.

Who is responsible

This site is run by The Mental Faculty B.V., a company registered in the Netherlands (KvK 55455301, VAT NL851720353B01), based in Amstelveen. Under the GDPR we are the controller of the data described here.

For anything on this page — a question, a correction, or a request to delete your data — write to hello@grownuplanguage.com. We answer these ourselves, so allow a few days.

The email address you give us

When you sign up for news of new books we ask for your email address and nothing else. No name, no address, no payment details. The books themselves are free to download without giving us anything at all.

We use it for one thing: to email you when new books are ready. If you ask for a sample by email we send you that too. Every email carries an unsubscribe, and you can leave whenever you like.

Your address is stored with Brevo, an email provider based in France, who send the mail on our behalf. It stays on the list until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. We do not sell it, rent it, or pass it to anyone else.

The legal basis is your consent, which you gave by entering the address. You can withdraw it at any time; that does not affect anything sent before you did.

The download link

The book files are public. Downloading them asks you for nothing, sets no cookie, and is not tied to your address in any way. Older emails from us carry a link with a code derived from your address; that code cannot be turned back into your address by anyone who finds the link.

Other companies involved

Cloudflare hosts the site and serves the book files. Google Fonts serves the three typefaces, which means Google receives your IP address when a page loads. GoatCounter counts visits; it sets no cookie and collects nothing personal about you.

There are no advertising trackers on this site and no third-party cookies, which is why you are not being asked to accept any. We removed the one ad pixel we had rather than put a consent banner in front of you.

The site does set two small cookies of its own, and they are part of why you are not asked to accept anything. One is temporary and lasts only until you close the browser: it notes which Spanish edition to show you first, based on the country your connection appears to come from. The other remembers which Amazon store you picked. Everything you actually choose — your edition, your reading language — is kept in your own browser and never sent to us at all. Clearing any of it just means we ask again.

What you can ask for

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold on you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to us using it. In practice that is one line in an email and we will do it.

If you think we have handled your data badly and we have not put it right, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.
